Split-level, Milne Bay, PNG. The meeting of the world’s two most diverse ecosystems – tropical rainforests and coral reefs – is one of the most spectacular sights in nature. Although reefs and rainforests often occur in the same geographic regions, turbidity caused by terrestrial runoff often inhibits coral growth in close proximity to the rainforest. Here in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, the porous limestone that makes up the land filters the rainfall and ensures the water is clear and suitable for coral growth right up to the shoreline.
